Karlsruhe is counting on Indian talents as skilled workers of tomorrow
Whether on a cultural, scientific or economic basis, Karlsruhe is consistently expanding its close ties with India. At the most recent meeting of the ‘India Board Karlsruhe’ at the ‘Das Fest’ site, the theme ‘We are working on the future’ therefore focused on a key question: how can Indian students who are already living and studying in Karlsruhe be retained as skilled workers or entrepreneurs for the city after they graduate?
Karlsruhe as a key partner
With the ‘India Summer Days’, the accompanying ‘India Week’ and numerous collaborative projects, Karlsruhe has developed into a key component of German-Indian relations in recent years, emphasised Lord Mayor Dr Frank Mentrup – whilst highlighting the growing importance of exchanges between the two countries.
At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) alone, students from India now make up the largest international student group, with further Indian students attending the city’s other universities. This, too, strengthens the city of Karlsruhe’s ties with India, said Dr Mentrup: India is an important partner in addressing current challenges. This was a point also emphasised by Consul Amir Bashir from the Indian Consulate-General in Munich: as a “key hub for innovation”, Karlsruhe is also sending a strong signal with the “India Board”; the Consulate-General is happy to support these robust and diverse activities.
Many insights
Speakers shed light on how to make a successful transition from university to the world of work, offering different perspectives on topics such as job hunting, support services, language skills and start-up initiatives: Dr Manoj Nimbalkar from the ‘Indian Student Association’, Sonjoy Chaudhury from ‘Dr Wamser + Batra’, Petra Bender from the TRK Welcome Centre, and Diethelm Rumpel and Ralf Eichhorn from the Karlsruhe Economic Development Agency.
During the discussion that followed, it became clear that international talent does not simply choose a job, but a place to live. The ‘India Board Karlsruhe’ therefore intends to continue working with its partners to improve the framework conditions and foster even closer ties between Indian students, companies and institutions, so that studying in Karlsruhe can lead to a long-term future in the region.
