Trilok Gurtu is coming to Karlsruhe with Jan Garbarek

Trilok Gurtu has become famous as a bridge between Indian and Western musical traditions, initially in the world of jazz and, since the mid-1990s, as a representative of world music. Now he is accompanying star saxophonist Jan Garbarek—in Karlsruhe!“

The human voice is my ideal,” says Garbarek, and there is hardly a saxophonist who has come as close to this ideal as the musician from Norway. Moreover, the distinctive sound of star saxophonist Garbarek is unmistakable—and his trademark around the world. 

On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, he will perform at the Tollhaus Cultural Center in Karlsruhe as part of the “Zeltival” starting at 8:30 p.m.—accompanied by Rainer Brüninghaus on piano, Yuri Daniel on bass, and the legendary Indian drummer Gurtu, who was born in Bombay and now lives in his adopted home of Hamburg.

The evening at “Zeltival” highlights the contrast between the song-like, poetic, and unpretentious elements and the intensity of free improvisation with other musicians—a contrast that defines Garbarek’s artistry—as the artists accompanying him each contribute in their own way, whether it’s his longtime collaborator Brüninghaus on piano, the wild drum wizard Gurtu from India, or the Brazilian Daniel on bass.
