Thomas Niggli & Luca Carangelo
Luca Carangelo (tabla / kanjira / percussion), born in Biel/Bienne in 1968, learned the basics of tabla playing in the 1990s and went on to study with the Indian masters Anindo Chatterjee, Jatinder Thakur, and Sankha Chatterjee in the years that followed. This was followed by advanced studies in South Indian rhythm and playing techniques. His concert activities and musical projects focus in particular on Indian classical music, jazz, and improvised music. Luca Carangelo has been a long-time guest lecturer at the Bern University of the Arts, has taught tabla at the Biel/Bienne Music School since 2006, and has headed the Jazz, Pop, and Rock Department there since 2017.
Thomas Niggli, born in Zurich in 1954, has been involved with Indian music and the sitar since his youth. After studying psychology, he completed basic training at Benares Hindu University in Benares. A year later, he studied in Delhi under Shubhendra Rao, deepening his understanding of the subtleties and details of the musical style influenced by Ravi Shankar.
Thomas Niggli teaches sitar, performs regularly, and is frequently engaged for studio projects. He is committed to blending Indian classical music with other musical genres.
